A-2986 and A-1973
Awaits Governor’s Action

Dear Governor Corzine:

The issue of gangs in our communities is one that demands a continuing partnership between State and Local entities. The problem has such widespread impact that we cannot expect law enforcement to be the sole solution. The League’s Gang Prevention and Youth Violence Task Force continues to promote this comprehensive approach which also focuses on prevention and intervention efforts that enlist the cooperation of other entities such as schools, faith-based and other community based organizations.

We are encouraged by your commitment to ensure this problem remains a top priority of your Administration and we are pleased you have signed into law, two of the seventeen bills from the “Fighting Gangs, Protecting Our Youth” legislative package.  Presently, two additional bills from that package have reached your desk. Specifically, Acs for A-2986 which requires Disadvantaged Youth Employment Opportunities Council to report to the State Employment and Training Commission. The Disadvantaged Youth Council was created as part of a pilot program to provide employment opportunities for at-risk, disadvantaged youth. The other bill, A-1973 requires the Attorney General to develop annual gang education seminars for public and nonpublic school administrators.

The League supports both of these proposals and will continue to focus on strategies to blend prevention and intervention. We urge your support of the above referenced proposals.

Thank You.

                                                                        Very truly yours,
