The 17 bill legislative package was passed by the General Assembly on Monday, May 22, 2006. Presently, the package awaits consideration by the Senate Law & Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee. We have urged the Chairman of this Committee (Senator Girgenti) to schedule a hearing as soon as possible on these bills.
GANG VIOLENCE DETERRENCE:
A-2602- Regulates sale of ammunition.
A-2599- Forfeiture of motor vehicle where weapon was unlawfully possessed.
A-2667- Upgrades crime of recruiting a minor to join a gang.
A-2831-Establishes criminal firearms recovery clearing house.
A-2840- Upgrade penalty for unlawful possession of assault firearm.
A-2841- Upgrades penalty for transferring firearm to a minor.
A-2991- Enhances penalties for possessing, receiving and transferring community guns (adopted 1-26-07 as chapter 24).
AGENCY AND SYSTEM REFORM
A-1706- Improve Gang Related Crime Data Collection.
A-1834- Increases Victims of Crime Compensation Board Assessments.
A-2987- Requires Court to conduct inquiry concerning source of bail funds where defendant charged with serious crime (adopted 2-21-07 as chapter 46).
A-2988 – Require “stay away” orders as condition of release on bail.
A-2989- Bars disclosure of personal identifying information of grand jury witnesses.
A-2992- Requires hospitals to report certain injuries to Local and State Police.
AR-183- Urges expeditious disposition of crimes involving guns.
SOCIAL INTERVENTION
A-1650- Requires boards of education to offer elementary school students instruction in gang violence prevention. (adopted 1-26-07 as chapter 22)
A-1973- Requires Office of Attorney General to provide annual gang education seminars for school administrators. (on Governor’s desk as of June 21, 2007)
A-2986- Creates Youth Employment and After School Incentive Pilot Program; appropriates $50,000. (On Governor’s desk as of June 18, 2007)
