Last month, your League of Municipalities moved into a new headquarters building at 222 West State Street. We hope you visit it whenever you are in the Capital City. Our new home means a lot to us. Our offices are in the old Roebling mansion that had been built by one of Trenton’s first families during its industrial Golden Age. We look forward to a long future in a building with a great past. The Roebling’s invented and manufactured the steel cable that was used in the suspension bridges that tied our nation’s economy together. From early railroad bridges to the Brooklyn Bridge to the Golden Gate, it was said that if you could turn any of those bridges upside down, you’d see on the bottom a stamp that said, “Made in Trenton.” That cable made possible the elevators that were produced by the Otis Brothers of Newark. And that changed the skyline of every city in the world. The cable was used to outfit the ships of the U.S. Navy. And it helped hold together a small plane called “The Spirit of Saint Louis” that made a little history in 1927. As municipal officials, and as a League, we are also called to build bridges. We are called to raise high the hopes and the prospects of our fellow citizens. We sometimes sail on stormy seas and we often are forced to fly solo to reach our goals. And now that we’re in a new building, your League of Municipalities remains anchored to the same old cornerstone. And that is our dedication to your service. We will continue to do all that we can to help you to make your hometowns the best they can possibly be. We will continue to provide you with the information and training that you need to be the best public servant you can possibly be. And we will continue to advocate progressive changes to state laws, rules and regulations to assist our beleaguered property taxpayers and to make it possible for you to make municipal administration more effective, more efficient, more ethical and more economical. Local self-government, also known as Home Rule, has always been the cornerstone of our American Democracy. And our defense of that bedrock will not waver
