Last month, all across New Jersey hundreds of local officials swore an oath of office. For some of you, this was a new experience. Welcome to the wide, wild, wonderful world of New Jersey municipal government. For others, this was the renewal of a pledge you’d made before. Welcome back.
For all of you, and for all of your lucky colleagues who did not have to run the electoral gauntlet last November, know that this League exists to help you honor your vow to serve the public to the very best of your abilities.
The League’s staff is your staff. Our programs and publications are your resources. And our office in Trenton is yours, as well.
In this issue of your magazine, our Senior Legislative Analysts have outlined the League’s policy objectives for 2006. We have included an insert on the Legislative Process that will help you to better understand what you can do to appropriately influence your state legislators to protect and advance the interests of your constituents. And, as always, many of the stories in this issue will help you to better understand the problems and the prospects that lie before us.
Beyond the resources that appear in these pages, we urge you to take advantage of all the League services. Please read our “Dear Mayor” letters as soon as they come in. You may be able to affect an outcome today, but not tomorrow. Plan to attend League seminars, which give you the information you need, when you need it. Call for copies of bills or for information on League positions. Visit our website at www.njslom.com for the most up-to-date information on the crucial issues facing our state and your municipalities. And please feel free to contact us, so that we can better help you meet the needs of the voters who have put their trust in you.
We are committed to being your partners in making your communities and the lives of your constituents the best they can possibly be. Your active participation in the partnership is vital to the advancement of that noble goal.
