Happy New Year to all! And a hearty welcome to
new year of the magazine of municipal
Garden State. From the beginning, New Jersey Municipalities has been recognized for its depth and breadth of issues' analysis.
In 1917, our first year of publication, we featured articles of timeless interest. Governor Walter E. Edge wrote on "Municipalities and the Legislature." New York State Senator Robert F. Wagner contributed "How the People's Money Should Be Spent." R.D. Forbes, an assistant Forester for the New Jersey Department of Conservation and Development attempted to resolve the dilemma "Shade Trees or None." And an article on county government, which included a quote by former governor, President Woodrow Wilson, was entitled "The County: The Devil's Political Masterpiece."
For 88 years now, the League has helped to make dedicated New Jersey municipal officials the best educated and informed local public servants in our nation
|
In addition to these, there were articles on municipal budgeting, bonding, billboard regulation, purchasing, policing, paving, personnel, public utilities, refuse collection, water conservation and the cultivation of civic virtue and citizen involvement in their local government.
Our dedication to a detailed analysis of all things municipal
continues. From the many and varied conference sessions in
Atlantic City, to our series of one-day seminars, held all around the state and all throughout the year, to the pages of
this periodical, we do our best to honor our heritage. The
policy of this magazine
was spelled out in its very first edition. "This magazine has no master but truth and no object but service...To every fact or set of facts we shall apply only the acid test: Is it true? If it is and its publication would serve a useful purpose we shall publish it." That policy has been adopted by our seminar program, and it informs our conference planning, every step of the way. Whether you are new to local government or have already served for years, we invite you to take advantage of all the services that the League has to offer. For 88 years now, the League has helped to make dedicated New Jersey municipal officials the best educated and informed local public servants in our nation and in the world.
