FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Robert L. Bowser, Mayor, East Orange City
Dear Colleagues:
As your new League President, I want you to know that I am depending on you. During my tenure, I will consist-ently ask more elected officials to get more involved in more League activities. The League can only work for us, if we work with the League. Though it is not always easy in a small, densely populated, and diverse State, like New Jersey, we need to focus on the values that unite us. In addition, we need to work together to promote those values within the League, among our colleagues in local elected office and in the corridors of power in Trenton and Washington.
We will face many challenges and opportunities over the next twelve months. Some - like a new school funding formula, the Administration’s long-awaited debt restruct-uring plan, gang activity and violent crime, affordable housing, and redevelopment and preservation strategies to support and enhance local economies – can be anticipated. Others will inevitably emerge. Only by united action can the municipal perspective on any of those issues have an impact on the outcome.
At our Mayors’ Legislative Day next month in Trenton, I hope to see many of my colleagues. Moreover, I hope to see many of you at many more League activities through-out the coming months.
Sincerely yours,
Robert L. Bowser, Mayor, East Orange;
President, NJLM

THANK YOU TO THE
CONFERENCE VOLUNTEERS
-Contact Bill Dressel, ext.122
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those that volunteered their time and talents to make the 92nd Annual Conference a tremendous success! To the Nominating, Reception, and Resolutions’ Committees, your support has been invaluable. In addition, the League staff worked extremely hard behind the scenes.
The New Jersey State League of Municipalities Conference is the largest municipal conference in the nation. This year, 20,000 attendees descended on the Atlantic City Convention Center. They visited 800 exhibiting companies, occupying 1,154 booths.
I am looking forward to seeing you at the 93rd Annual Conference – November 18 – 21, 2008!
CONGRATULATIONS!
Richard L. McCormick, President, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, recognized William G. Dressel, Jr., Executive Director of the League with the Rutgers Award for Public Service to New Jersey.
HOT DATES, HOT TOPICS
-Contact Karen E. Venditti, CMP, ext. 118
Mark your calendars with these important dates. To begin the New Year is the seminar titled, “The World of Elections in New Jersey!” Sponsored by the League and the Municipal Clerks’ Association, and led by Assistant Attorney General, Donna Kelly, this seminar is scheduled for Thursday, January 10, at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, and Friday, January 11 at The Enterprise Center at BCC in Mt. Laurel.
Topics discussed are issues of concern to the municipal clerks. They are the primary responsibilities of election officials in New Jersey, voter registration, write-in candidates, absentee and paper ballots, polling places, challengers, Election Day procedures, electoral integrity, OPRA, and the Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail Act.
Next on the calendar is the Orientation for Newly Elected, Re-Elected, and Experienced Municipal Officials. The Radisson Hotel Saddle Brook is hosting the first date on Saturday, January 12. The Enterprise Center at Burlington County College in Mt. Laurel is hosting the Saturday, February 9 date. Two new venues for this important event!
This orientation for municipal officials, who are newly elected, re-elected, or experienced is fast-paced and designed to bring elected officials up-to-date on important municipal issues. The newly elected officials will get a thorough overview of their major areas of responsibility, key contacts at the State level, and important sources of information and assistance.

2008 Annual Mayors’ Legislative Day
Wednesday, January 16, at the State House Annex
- Contact Karen E. Venditti, ext. 118
The Legislative Mayors’ Day is a unique opportunity for Governor Corzine to speak to our state’s municipal leaders about his legislative, budgetary and policy priorities for 2008 and beyond. In addition, key legislative leaders will receive an invitation. It is an important opportunity for local leaders to interact with the individuals, who will control property tax relief funding during the next budget cycle.
2007 10th ANNUAL ELECTED OFFICIALS
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES
-Visit njslom.org/hallelec_cover.html
It is an honor for the New Jersey State League of Muni-cipalities to recognize those governing body members, active and retired, who have served twenty years in elected municipal office. These special elected officials have governed their municipalities for lengthy terms, guiding their communities through the good times and troubled times, with little recognition. The Elected Officials Hall of Fame shines a light on these pillars in our communities and holds them up as an example of civic pride for all citizens to emulate. These special elected municipal officials are honored at the Mayors’ Legislative Day, January 16, 2008!
