FROM THE PRESIDENT
By Timothy McDonough, Mayor, Hope
I recently completed my second of two visits with Governor Cozine to Fort Sill, Oklahoma to thank the members of the 1-150th Assault Helicopter Battalion for their service. The first trip was March 12 and the second was April 9. Members from the 1-150th come from five states and hundreds of different New Jersey municipalities. They are based out of West Trenton Army Aviation Support Facility. So there is a good chance one of these soldiers comes from your municipality.
The Governor and I shared our gratitude for their service and expressed how proud their state and hometowns are as they prepared for deployment to Iraq. I spent several hours meeting with troops and experienced their helicopter training exercises with them.
During the visits, the Governor and Major General Glenn K. Rieth presented several awards and commendations to Guard members.
These visits to Fort Sill included several federal, state and local officials, employers of guardsmen, and military officials. The visits provide both an opportunity to express our gratitude and to gain important insight into the work of our air and army National Guard

NEW LEAGUE SERVICE
Recruitment and Selection Advisory Service
-Contact http://www.njslom.org/recruitment.html
Hiring a new manager or administrator can be a difficult and daunting task for a municipality. The League and the New Jersey Municipal Management Association (NJMMA) have launched a new advisory service to provide guidance to municipalities in their recruitment and selection process. This new service provides reference materials and tips on the hiring process, and offers a retired municipal administrator or manager to meet with elected officials and discuss the overall recruitment process, answering questions that local officials may have about the best practices.
Please note: this service does not become directly involved in the recruitment process; rather it offers guidance on the best methods to be used by local officials to accomplish their recruitment goals and to avoid some of the many pitfalls that can occur during the transition period between administrators/managers.

PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY MAY 15
Since 1962, Peace Officers Memorial Day is held annually in the United States on May 15 in honor of federal, state and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. It is observed in conjunction with Police Week. While it is not a public holiday, many communities hold memorial services and fly the flag at half staff. A national memorial service is held in Washington DC on May 15.
