Mayors Needed for Legislative Committee
FROM THE PRESIDENT
By David DelVecchio, Mayor, Lambertville
On January 17, local elected officials from all around New Jersey gathered in the State House Complex in Trenton to hear major policy statements from Governor Corzine and key legislative leaders.
We want to thank the Governor, who took time from his busy schedule to address his colleagues on the local level. We also want to thank Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman, Minority Leader Alex DeCroce, Assemblyman Lou Greenwald, and Senators John Adler and Leonard Lance for their time and for their honest appraisals of the prospects for public policy progress this year. We finally want to commend the dozens of mayors and governing body members who came to Trenton on a chilly Wednesday morning for this important and informative session.
The main theme of all speakers was the need for timely and decisive action toward property tax reform. Other major policy areas discussed included, health and pension costs, interest arbitration, school funding, local budget caps and the State budget deficit.
This will be a challenging year for Governor Corzine and for the State Legislature, as it will also be for local elected officials all around our Garden State. Those that made the trip to Trenton are, we hope, a little bit better prepared to confront the problems and to seize the opportunities that will arise over the next twelve months.

2007 SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION
-Contact Michael Darcy ext.116
Recently, the League mailed information to all mayors concerning the Annual Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. Mayor Phyllis Marchand of Princeton Township chairs the Scholarship Competition. This popular competition is open to all high school juniors and seniors throughout the state. The top three winners each receive $1,000 scholarships from the League.
Mayors play an integral role in the success of this program because your office publicizes its availability, judges the local entries, and distributes the checks and certificates supplied by the League. You should publicize the scholarship to your local schools and judging committee. Your local winning entry must be submitted to the League office by April 3, so we can announce the three statewide winners by May 5.
