Re: “National Donate Life Month” Press Conference
In support of more than 4,500 New Jersey residents waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs and the City of Plainfield, New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network (NJ Sharing Network), and the New Jersey League of Municipalities held a joint press conference on Monday, April 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Plainfield City Hall Library to kick off “National Donate Life Month”.
The press conference was held to acknowledge April as Donate Life Month and most importantly to encourage municipal decision makers, residents and the public at-large to register to become organ and tissue donors.
NJ Sharing Network is working with the New Jersey League of Municipalities, Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs and the City of Plainfield to launch municipal and mayoral partnerships that will significantly increase awareness about what the needs are in our communities as it relates to increasing organ and tissue donation for life-saving transplant surgery.
We have a lofty goal of increasing organ donor designations by 250,000 new registrants this year either at the Motor Vehicle Agencies or through online registration. Addition municipal decision makers can help and show their support for organ donation year-round by serving as a bridge to their high school boards to ensure that school education mandates are fulfilled under the New Jersey Hero Act. Officials can work with the NJ Sharing Network and Donate Life NJ to create public service announcements, sponsor press conferences, link their websites to www.donatelifenj.org and organize municipal donor registry drives in conjunction with community events, all to encourage increased donor designations.
Partners and others in attendance to support the event and its efforts included:
Assemblyman Jerry Green, 22nd Legislative District
Dr. Jose Adamas, President, Union County College/Plainfield Campus
Dr. Steven Gallon, Superintendent, Plainfield School District
William Dressel, Jr., Executive Director, the NJ State League of Municipalities
