Re:      Update on A-3766 S-2664 “Market Competition and Consumer Choice Act”

Dear Mayor:

Thanks to your follow through on our February 23 letter, the Senate has NOT advanced the current version of S2664/A3766.  Accordingly, we now have a chance to convince legislators to amend this bill, so that it will NOT remove existing municipal benefits from systemwide cable franchises, now and going forward.  (We detailed the problems with the current draft in our earlier letter of February 23.)

Now, we urge you to please do the following:

  • Share this letter with your Cable TV Advisory committee if you have established one.
  • Learn how many video and internet drops are provided to your schools, fire and police offices and all other municipal offices through your cable franchise.
  • Learn how many return feeds are provided by your cable franchise.
  • Consider the total cost of those to your community.
  • Contact your Senator and inform them of the possible impact on your community if you have to pay for each of those drops and ask them to have a fiscal impact note prepared for this bill.
  • Contact your two Assembly Members and encourage them to commit to supporting the amendments that address our concerns. (Without this commitment, any benefits we win in the Senate could be lost, when the bill is sent back to the other House.)

It is very important that you contact your Senator, your representative in the General Assembly and the Governor’s office now. Tell them that you oppose this legislation, which, as currently drafted, will increase costs for local government. Ask them to support the necessary amendments.   Then let the League office know how they have responded to you by email to Michael Darcy

If you require any further clarification on this please contact Michael Darcy at the League.

Very truly yours,

Hon. Brian Wahler                                                                 William G. Dressel, Jr.
Mayor, Piscataway Township                                                  Executive Director
Chair, League Telecommunications Committee
