April 19, 2009 Support the Troops Day A Major Success
Volunteers raised more than $40,000 to support deployed New Jersey Army and Air National Guard troops and their families on Sunday at a day of music, muscle cars and military displays at the Lawrenceville Armory.
The 75-member Blawenburg Band provided the entertainment with a concert featuring Dixieland classics and a sampling of John Phillip Sousa’s best marches. Nearly 50 classic cars were on display on the armory grounds as well as National Guard equipment including an OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopter.
Money raised in donations went to support the New Jersey State Family Readiness Council, which provides financial assistance to National Guard families suffering from financial hardships caused by deployments. New Jersey is in the middle of the largest combat mobilization since World War II. More than 3,000 of the state’s Army National Guard Soldiers – about half the entire force – are currently serving in Iraq.
